Our orthodontist recently recommended that you have braces in Eugene, Oregon. You are excited to have your teeth become straighter and healthier. Did you know that there are certain things that you can do to protect your braces to ensure that your straightening treatment goes as planned? Dr. Anthony Paventy and our team are happy to give you tips to help you keep your braces in tip top shape.
When your braces are placed, our orthodontist will give you a list of foods to stay away from while wearing braces. In general, you should avoid any food that is sticky, chewy, or hard. Sticky foods include caramel and gum. These are likely to get stuck in your braces. Crunchy food like popcorn or hard pretzels can become lodged in the braces.
Be especially careful about oral habits while wearing braces. Non-food objects should not be placed in the mouth. Biting nails or pens can damage your braces very easily. Eating ice can also cause serious damage.
Even if you are careful with your braces, accidents can happen. For instance, a blow to the face can cause a bracket or wire to become loose or broken. If this occurs, call our office as soon as possible to schedule an appointment. You can use orthodontic wax to temporarily reattach a loose bracket or to cover the end of a wire that is sticking out.
